The HAIRSALONS.at team collects the hair you cut off and uses it to clean lakes, rivers and the sea!
So far, tons of hair leftovers from
Approx. 100,000 hairdressing salons in Germany and Austria disposed of with the residual waste, as only a few
Hair suitable for wigs. However, the question of whether the cut hair is still useful for something has always been present, but now there is a solution.
This organization was looking for a way to do something good with the hair that was cut off and discovered the "hair filters".
The French club is a role model
"Coiffeur Justes"
(fair hairdressers) from southern France.
The hair is stuffed into old nylon stockings, tied into rolls and then used as a filter in polluted waters. The suction function of the hair filter pulls the oil out of the water, is then cleaned and can be reused up to eight times. One kilogram of hair can filter up to eight kilograms of oil from the water.
These hair filters are used worldwide. In lakes and bodies of water, in front of industrial areas and on coasts to filter oils, fuel residues and suntan lotion out of the water. In the summer of 2019, the hair filters were also used off Mauritius when a freighter ran aground there and lost several thousand tons of oil.
For most people, hair cut off at the hairdresser's is just waste. But hairdresser Thierry from Marseille realized that they could be used to clean up the seas. You will find out exactly how this works here in the Galileo report.
